Would you support a Pride Parade in Downtown DeLand?
Yes
Why are you running for office What motivates you to serve your community?
I'm tired of the two party system dividing people and putting them against each other in attempt to keep them in power
Why should people vote for you and not your opponents?
Because both parties suck!

How do you plan to support members of the LGBTQ community in DeLand and Volusia County?
vote to repeal all laws which government discriminates against people and businesses based on sexual & gender preferences & identities.
Would you support a Pride Parade in Downtown DeLand?
Yes. Privately funded and organized, rather than government.
Why are you running for office What motivates you to serve your community?
Government has infringed on rights too far for too long. I want to take over the government so it can leave everyone alone to lead the life they wish and express themselves as they wish and freely associate with who they wish.
Why should people vote for you and not your opponents?
When I’m elected, I’ll understand that I don’t suddenly know how to make decisions for your life better than you. I won’t vote for government to do that.
John Navarra
How do you plan to support members of the LGBTQ community in DeLand and Volusia County?
I am a public school teacher in Volusia County. I will do my best to reverse the state legislation that has harmed the LBGTQ+ community. I will help the LBGTQ+ community to be represented with their concerns on the state level.
Would you support a Pride Parade in Downtown DeLand?
Yes
Why are you running for office What motivates you to serve your community?
I have planned on running since I was 18 years old. My first motivation was to help reduce poverty in my community. Now I need to also help people afford housing, be able to afford housing insurance and be safe from flooding.
Why should people vote for you and not your opponents?
I have worked in many organizations like the teachers union and FAITH for decades. I want to take an intellectual approach governing and do the hard work tri;y make people's lives better.

How do you plan to support members of the LGBTQ community in DeLand and Volusia County?
I would directly oppose any laws in Tallahassee that are aimed to take the rights away from anyone in the LGBTQ+ community, and sponsor and vote only for bills that protect the rights of all. Government shouldn't be involved in the relationships of others.
Would you support a Pride Parade in Downtown DeLand?
Yes
Why are you running for office What motivates you to serve your community?
I believe the current crop of legislators in Tallahassee as well as previous ones have spent more time controlling the lives of others, rather than protecting their rights, which is what government should be doing. I am running to push our government back in that direction.
Why should people vote for you and not your opponents?
I will always vote on the side of individual rights. I can't be bought by PACs, by Corporations, and am grassroots funded. I will always represent the will of the constituents in the district before any lobbyist or corporations.

How do you plan to support members of the LGBTQ community in DeLand and Volusia County?
To support the LGBTQ+ community in DeLand and Volusia County, I will advocate for local anti-discrimination ordinances, ensuring equal rights in housing, employment, and public accommodations. I will work to enhance healthcare access by promoting LGBTQ+-inclusive services and training for medical staff.
Would you support a Pride Parade in Downtown DeLand?
Yes
Why are you running for office What motivates you to serve your community?
I am running for office to ensure equitable opportunities and protections for all residents of our community. The current direction Florida is headed, with increasing polarization and policies that undermine equality and justice, deeply disturbs me. I am motivated by a commitment to promote inclusive policies, protect civil rights, and address critical issues like healthcare access and environmental sustainability, fostering a community where everyone can thrive.
Why should people vote for you and not your opponents?
I have a unique opponent in that my opponent calls himself a 'man of the cloth' yet takes to the State Capitol during business and discriminates an entire community - something we haven't seen in 60+ years. My opponent introduced the 6-week abortion ban to Florida... People should vote for me because I am committed to addressing the real needs of our community with integrity, transparency, and inclusivity. Unlike my opponent(s), my campaign is powered by grassroots support, reflecting a genuine commitment to serve all residents, not just special interests. I will advocate for equitable healthcare access, protect civil rights for all, and implement sustainable environmental policies. The current direction Florida is taking is concerning, with increased polarization and policies that undermine equality and justice. I offer a forward-thinking, inclusive approach to ensure a thriving and united community.
Volusia County Sheriff:
Mike Chitwood
How do you plan to support members of the LGBTQ community in DeLand and Volusia County?
I will continue to stand up for the protection of all members of my community regardless of any labels often used to divide us. I'm proud to say that I've spoken out against insulting and dehumanizing attacks on the LGBTQ+ community, whether those attacks are coming from neo-Nazis spewing hate, or from one of our own state representatives. I encourage you to Google my track record, because I want to make it clear that all residents and visitors deserve and will receive equal protection under the law in Volusia County. That said, speaking out is not the only way to support the LGBTQ+ community. We have enhanced criminal penalties in Florida for hate crimes, and we are not afraid to use them when applicable. For example, in 2022, we arrested a teenager on an enhanced hate crime charge after he brutally attacked a 16-year-old boy while repeatedly calling him a slur commonly used against gay people. Deputies determined the attack was motivated by prejudice. We can't turn a blind eye to hate, and while we have come a long way in certain areas of society compared to decades past, we still have a lot of work to do in establishing a broader culture of acceptance and respect for others.
Would you support a Pride Parade in Downtown DeLand?
Yes. I would be happy to support a Pride Parade in DeLand or any of our communities in Volusia County, assuming all the proper permits are granted. Not only that, I would pledge all the law enforcement resources necessary to make sure the event is safe for all who participate and attend. While Downtown DeLand falls in the jurisdiction of the DeLand Police Department, I will gladly offer personnel from the Sheriff's Office (both visible and an unseen presence) to assist in protecting against any potential threats. We'll also take steps at our intelligence center (VC3) to monitor social media chatter from extremist groups or others who might indicate plans to threaten, disrupt, or terrorize a peaceful Pride event. When you have a date set for this event, I encourage the organizers to reach out to me or my office so we can begin coordinating these resources. Most importantly, please be sure to communicate with the city to secure the necessary permits and ensure that the right resources for traffic safety, management, and more are all in place.
Why are you running for office What motivates you to serve your community?
I've spent virtually my entire adult life in this career because I love to help people solve problems, and I believe I'm good at it. I ran for Sheriff for the first time in 2016 because I saw an opportunity to bring new ideas and philosophies to an entire county. We brought in innovative new programs, technology, and tools that make our county safer and help us earn trust from the community. In addition to solving crime at a rate high above the national average, we're working to identify and address the root causes. For example, in 2022 we established the comprehensive Volusia Family Resource Center to screen and process every juvenile who is arrested, plus many other at-risk youth whose families ask for help. Those screenings help identify mental health issues, substance abuse patterns, behavioral problems, and other factors that used to go unresolved. Now we can get the right social service agencies involved to help solve the underlying problems. We also established an Overdose Task Force that brings a full-court press to every overdose investigation AND refers survivors and their families to the Volusia Recovery Alliance for help overcoming addiction. We make lots of arrests through a lot of great work, but we can't arrest our way out of all our long-term problems. These are just a couple of ways I see us not only fighting crime, but increasing public safety by addressing the root causes. The success we have seen from these initiatives motivates me to keep pushing forward.
Why should people vote for you and not your opponents?
We've built an organization that's giving Volusia County the high level of service and professionalism the people deserve. As Sheriff, I believe I've established a proven track record of accessibility, responsiveness, and transparency. The results speak for themselves, but I'm proud to put my name on the ballot and make the case that I have earned your support. I don't consider my opponent a serious candidate for sheriff as he's a pool builder with zero law enforcement experience other than being arrested multiple times.

How do you plan to support members of the LGBTQ community in DeLand and Volusia County?
For decades, I have had LGBTQ+ friends. I do not tolerate discrimination or prejudice. I will continue to be a friend of the LGBTQ+ community
Would you support a Pride Parade in Downtown DeLand?
While I have no standing to vote on DeLand's parades, if the city approved a Pride Parade, I would support the activity.
Why are you running for office What motivates you to serve your community?
My mother taught me to be kind to everyone. I became a teacher to help children learn. Later, as a principal, I served children, their parents, and grandparents. I enjoyed helping students reach their potential. I want to help our community become the best it can be, which is the reason I served as an Ormond Beach City Commissioner, Mayor and Volusia County Council member. I get satisfaction from helping people and giving them a hand up.
Why should people vote for you and not your opponents?
My positive, respectful, and professional record of public service- 35 years as a teacher and principal. My service as an elected official at the city, county, and school board levels for 24 years. Most importantly, last year Volusia County Schools had 17 A rated schools more than doubling the number of schools earning an A in 2022. For the first time since 2008, no VC school received an F or D grade. During my term on the Board, our graduation rate continued to climb. We now surpass the state average by 3.6% I am proud of have earned Principal of the Year, Humanitarian of the Year, and Citizen of the Year, and Community Leader awards. I am more energized then ever to make the Volusia County School District even better!

I would provide the same support and voice that I do for ALL residents
Would you support a Pride Parade in Downtown DeLand?
Yes, but to be fair, It should be noted that I would not have any direct impact on such a vote within Deland
Why are you running for office What motivates you to serve your community?
For years I have been an active and engaged resident only to be targeted for speaking up. Many in the Deltona community feel I could make great improvements and have asked me to run for the District seat. I am motivated by my passion to see Deltona turn around and reach its potential.
Why should people vote for you and not your opponents?
That is a personal choice each voter should take seriously. Each voter should do research, reach out and talk to candidates, and make the best choice for who they feel will best represent them.

Volusia County Chair:
Don Burnette
How do you plan to support members of the LGBTQ community in DeLand and Volusia County?
Prejudice has no place in our community or our country. Everyone deserves equal protection under the law. We need government that works for everyone equally in order to build strong communities here in Volusia County.
Would you support a Pride Parade in Downtown DeLand?
Yes, assuming the proper permits are lawfully obtained and your intentions are communicated to city leaders
Why are you running for office What motivates you to serve your community?
I've spent my entire life in Volusia County, and I want to see that it is preserved for future generations. We need effective leadership that works well and collaborates with others. We need to fix our broken ambulance transport system. We need a beach management plan that makes sense, renourishes the 6.6 million cubic yards of sand that it has lost, and preserves its natural habitat. We need to step up land acquisitions through Volusia and Florida Forever Programs because once that land is lost, it can never be reclaimed and preserved. We need water management plans that work. I have extensive experience that can make a difference for these things and others. I plan on living my life out here in Volusia, and I want to see our home be the best it can be.
Why should people vote for you and not your opponents?
My extensive experience as Mayor of Port Orange in working with others on many of the issues that face us is something my opponents lack. The results speak to my experience with building high quality communities and keeping them safe. No one can do big things alone. We must work together to move forward. We cannot watch our problems continue to get lip service without real solutions. Experience matters!
